Your Big Vision (Expert Business Blueprint – Part 1/5)

“A journey of a thousand miles must begin with a single step.
Your first step is creating your vision”

I believe that there is a reason you took (or are planning to take) the difficult, scary, and often lonely path of starting your own business.

I believe you have something to give to the world. Something that is so big, so precious, so urgent – that you cannot hold it for yourself anymore. Something that needs a vehicle to make this world a better place.

This vehicle is… your business.

And it’s your moral obligation to make this vehicle – the biggest, fastest, safest vehicle it can be. This reason that you have to start your own business, this big WHY is your BIG VISION.

And to be successful in today’s world:

  • You must have a clear vision for your business,
  • You must explicitly communicate it to the world; and
  • Everything your business does needs to be congruent with your vision.

Being in harmony with your big vision and communicating that effectively clarifies to your prospects, clients, employees, partners, providers AND competitors – your values, your beliefs and what you stand for. This clarity works like a powerful magnet…
.

  • On one side, it attracts to your business those who resonate with your vision (i.e. your values and beliefs).
  • And, on the other side, it pushes away anyone whose values and beliefs are far removed from yours.

The First Time I Realized the Power of a Clear Vision

“Our vision is: Creating a better world by empowering people
to fulfil their greatest potential”

Nisandeh Neta

I still remember the first time I said these words to 200 strangers, sitting in one of our events, many years ago. And I added: “and our mission is: to touch the lives of one million people.”

I was so scared to share such a big vision and mission in front of these people who I had never seen in my life. I was sure they were going to laugh, ridicule me, think I’m a nut case, or worse of all… ignore it, as if it was just another sentence in a 2-hour lecture. But 20 minutes later, as the session ended, something happened that I didn’t expect…

I was walking to the stairs of the stage, on my way to lunch, when I realized that my path was blocked by a group of 30 or 40 people standing there, waiting for me to walk down the stairs.

  • There were several people who thanked me for sharing my vision.
  • There was an old woman who didn’t say a word, but her tears told me “go on!”
  • There was this big, bald guy who shook my hand for what seemed like forever…

But most of them just hugged me and asked a question:

  • “What can I do to help?”
  • “How can I be part of what you do?”
  • “Can I introduce you to…?”
  • “How can I spread the message to more people?”

And one guy that told me… “I have two boys. They’re 16 and 18. They have so much potential and it kills me not knowing how to get them to stop wasting it. Now I know… Next time they’ll be here, with me.”

Your vision should state clearly the WHY your business exists and HOW it intends to do it. WHAT your business is actually doing (your products/services) is not really a part of the vision, as it might change…

My vision of “creating a better world by empowering people to fulfill their greatest potential” is the same vision I used 30 years ago in my first software company, later in my training company (Open Circles Academy), and coming up in a few months our new company that will transform the business education world – same vision apply.

In each one of these companies – the WHAT we do is different, but the WHY and the HOW stays the same. I believe that most vision statements start with the words “creating a better world by…” whether you use them or not.

  • Our vision is: “Creating a better world by empowering people to fulfill their greatest potential.”
  • Facebook’s vision is: (Creating a better world by…) “Connecting people.”
  • Google’s vision is: (Creating a better world by…) “Making Information available for everyone.”

My Recipe for a Successful Business From the First Moment:

  1. Start a business from a big vision, then
  2. Make that vision clearer and more concrete by adding a mission to it (not your boring, pompous, self-serving mission statement you can see most companies plaster on their walls)… and then
  3. Break that mission into long-term and short-term goals
  4. Define your target audience, and
  5. Create the product or service you want to offer to this target audience, in order to achieve your goals, make your mission come true, and live your big vision.

Of course, this is NOT the order most small businesses start.

MOST entrepreneurs start with step #5.

They invest their precious time, energy and money on creating the perfect product or service… And then… Well then… MOST of them just start looking for clients, do some random marketing or sales talks, and mainly hope that someone will resonate with their offer. I don’t know a lot about MOST businesses, because I only worked with 150,000 of them. But I do know this… MOST businesses are broke.

It’s NOT your product of service that needs to attract prospects and clients. It’s your vision that needs to resonate with the RIGHT prospects and clients first. Products and services come later… So… if you already have an existing business, ask yourself, “do I have a powerful, inspiring, big vision that communicates my highest values and beliefs to the marketplace?” If the answer is “yes”… wonderful! I’d love to read it. Please post it in the comment box below to inspire and empower the rest of us. If your answer is “no”, “not sure” or “yes, but…” – then its high time for you to create one… Simply complete the sentence: “The reason for my business to exist is: to create a better world by…” And when you’re happy with the result, please post it in the comment box below, to feel how it is to explicitly share it with the world, and maybe to ask for supportive feedback.

Creating your big vision is step #1… but there are MORE
